In a hadith reported by Al-Bukhari in his ‘Saheeh’, The Prophet, salahu allahu ‘alayhi wa salam, said:
Siwaak cleanses the mouth and pleases the Lord.
In another hadith reported by Al-Bukhari, he also said:
Were it not for the fact that I did not want to make things too hard for my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwaak at every time of prayer.
Siwak can be used all the time, but it is especially recommended to use it in the following times:
1. Before you perform your ablution (wudhu).
2. Before entering the house to meet your family.
Aishah was asked what the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did when he first came home. She said, “When he entered his house, the first thing he would do was to use the siwaak.” (Reported by Muslim, 1/220).
3. When you wake up from sleep
Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan reported that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) got up during the night, he would clean his mouth thoroughly with the siwaak. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1/98 and Muslim, 1/220)
4. When entering the mosque
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess. [7:31]
5. Before reciting the Qur’an
